The coast has always been a place where I feel rejuvenated and at peace. With this painting, I found myself exploring a whirlpool of emotions, channeling that coastal energy through chaotic brush strokes and purposeful splatters. It wasn't until I added the birds that I felt the piece was complete—like finding calm in my own tempest and the sense of fun that is often experienced at the beach - even when the weather is less favourable.

Painting Techniques

This mesmerising watercolour artwork is meticulously crafted using Windsor & Newton paints on 200lb cotton cold-pressed paper that's been hand-stretched. The painting is made up of many layers of watercolour pigment. This allowed me to build depth into the water revealing the life beneath. I spray-lifted the background sky to build drama with the painting but to bring focus to the foreground's energy. I used an old brush toothbrush to spray gouache white pigment for the ocean spray
